Benefits of Using Gav Connect
Did you know that using Gav Connect can increase student success, retention, and completion?
A study conducted by the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (n.d.) found that use of Starfish to send students kudos supports student success, retention, and completion:
- Receiving one or more kudos increased credits earned by nearly 1 per semester on average.
- Receiving one or more kudos were 15.2% more likely to be retained the following fall than students who did not receive at least one kudo.
- Each additional kudo increased students’ odds of completing a credential within three years by 1.3%.
- Benefits were found to be more pronounced for part-time students, underrepresented minorities, and low income students:
- Part-time students who received at least one kudo:
- Greater increase in credits earned each semester compared to their full-time counterparts
- 21.6% more likely to be retained the following fall than part-time students that did not receive at least one kudo.
- Underrepresented Minorities (URM) students who received at least one kudo:
- Saw larger increases in credits earned each semester compared to non-URM students.
- For every additional kudo, odds of completion increased at a rate that was twice as high as the rate for non-URM students.
- Low-income students:
- For each additional kudo, odds of retention increased at a significantly higher rate than for non low-income students.
- Part-time students who received at least one kudo:
How will Faculty use Gav Connect?
Early Connect
Quickly let students know when you have a concern, refer them to campus services, and send kudos that let them know they're doing well or showing improvement!
Acknowledge your students' performance and progress throughout the entire term! When a student earns special recognition for improvement or good work, use Gav Connect to send a Kudo (positive reinforcement) celebrating their efforts. If a student begins to struggle, you can raise a Flag (early warning) in Gav Connect to notify them at the very first sign of getting off track. Flags are opportunities for students to get support and develop a plan for recovery and course completion. When students require assistance outside of the classroom, you can use Gav Connect to initiate a Referral with institutional resources such as tutoring, El Centro, or Mental Health Counseling. Lastly, students can "raise their hand" and request additional support on their own.
Support student success, retention, and completion by helping us see the whole picture.
Your observations, perspectives, and advice are vital to each student's journey from start to finish. Gav Connect fosters communication and connection between instructors, students, counselors, and support services by facilitating interventions, leveraging existing campus resources, and aiding in the removal of barriers students have to their college success. It provides a more holistic view of a student and enhances the way we work across campus to help students be successful. Your concerns are made visible to counselors and other support staff, equipping them to assist in addressing, resolving, and closing the loop with you on student issues.
Progress Reports
Complete Progress Reports quickly and easily using one system regardless of the students' program affiliation!
Starting Fall 2024, all faculty will be expected to complete Progress Reports for their students using Gav Connect. All support programs that require Progress Reports for their students, including GECA, have agreed to use Gav Connect for this purpose and to send out Progress Reports using the same timeline just once per semester.
